Good Bye Old Friend

Dear Old Cell Phone,

We had a good run, you and I. You gave me 4 1/2 great years, which, let's face it, is 3 years longer than we ever expected you to last. I received the worse news of my life through you but you also housed the sweet texts of my budding relationship with Matt, as well as pictures of my friends' new born babies.

While you lost the ability to vibrate over a year ago, your one ring option sang out like a 4 alarm fire until the bitter end. My sincere apologies for all the times I dropped you down the stairs, let you fall into the sand, and for the one time I let you flop into a mud puddle. All this abuse has left you looking like a dog's chew toy but you have earned a special place in my heart. You won't soon be forgotten.

Good bye old friend.
P.S. I think I'll miss your antenna the most.

Song of the Day
My roommate just brought to my attention that I have never played Footloose. How could I be so stupid!?

Love, Don't Love: Finishing a Book

Love: Finishing a book! It makes me want to hug whomever is closest to me.

Don't love: Finishing a book when you still have an hour to wait in the IPhone line and not seeing anyone particularly huggable.

Song of the Day
Not that I consider waking up in Vegas broke and hungover as a Positively great thing, but I do think Katy Perry's Waking Up in Vegas is a lot of fun.

Happy Anniversary! or Happy Birthday!

This week marks one year of PositivelyAnna! I haven’t decided if I’m going to call it an anniversary or a birthday but either way I’m very excited!

I clearly remember how it all began…my mom was in town visiting. We were lounging on my roof deck enjoying a beautiful day and I mentioned that I was thinking of starting a blog. My mom immediately shot up as this was the best idea she had ever heard (God bless my mom for thinking almost all my ideas are the best she has ever heard). I said I wanted to recommend upbeat song for people to listen to when they are feeling down. My mom thrust the tiny pad and pen she always carries around (the original Genius Journal) into my hand and demanded that I start writing this all down. She also insisted that I use my name in the title because when Oprah announces how much she loves my blog, which she undoubtedly will, we don’t want someone else taking the credit. And so PositivelyAnna was born.

Thanks to everyone for making this a great first year for Positively Anna!

Song of the Day
I'm sure by now you have all heard the news of the untimely death of Michael Jackson. While there has been great debate about his personal life, there is no denying that he was an amazing artist. I greatly appreciate his effort to put positive music into the world. The first song I played on PositivelyAnna was The Way You Make Me Feel and it remains my ultimate pick-me-up tune. So lets play it again!

Top 10 #2: Favorite Words

I may not know how to spell 'em but I sure do love words! I look up every word I don't know when I'm reading and I keep a dictionary on my bedside table just in case such an emergency should arrive.
I enjoyed making my list of top 10 favorite smells so I've decided to make a list of my top 10 favorite words.

10. Carabiner

9. Goal! (We are watching a replay of US' defeat over Spain and hearing the announcers shout "Goal!" sounds O so sweet)

8. Juxtaposition

7. Kandiyohi (This is a county in Minnesota near where Matt lives. It is so much fun to say that I just have to at least once a day)

6. Jesum Crow (Our childhood alternative to saying Jesus Christ)

5. Necromancer

4. El sacapuntas (It mean pencil sharpener and the only word I remember from 7th grade Spanish)

3. Chotchki

2. Kleptomaniac

1. Debacle

What are your favorite words?

Song of the Day

To stick with the word theme of today's post the song is Jackson 5's ABC.

One of My Favorite Things

As I've mentioned, some days it is tough to think of upbeat songs so I rely heavily on recommendations. When I first started PositivelyAnna, I asked friends for their "pick me up" songs because I couldn't think of enough on my own, but now I do it for a different reason. Now when I ask people for their happy songs they usually say "I can't think of any" but often times they come back up to me later and say "I thought of one! This song makes me happy no matter what is going on" or "This song always reminds me of this great time" and their faces light up. The very thought of that song makes them smile. And that is one of my favorite things.

When a dear friend recommended this song she was grinning ear to ear and then just had to sing it for a while. Today's song is ABBA's Does Your Mother Know.

10,000 Pound Bag

"If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all"
A reminder of this lesson hit me in the face today like a 10,000 pound bag of bricks. I'm not going to say anything more than that except if you feel like saying something nasty about someone, consider the 10,000 pound bag and DON'T!

Song of the Day
An excellent song about holding yourself accountable...please enjoy Michael Jackson's Man in the Mirror.

101 Things in 1001 Days: Status 4

Ha Zaaaa! It has been a little while but I've finished another Thing.

43. Open a 401K - This has been on my to do list for 5 years and I literally jumped for joy when I got my confirmation email. I'm officially a grownup!

Song of the Day
Today's song is Jennifer Hudson's Pocketbook. Now, hitting someone with your pocketbook doesn't fall into the Positively category, this song makes me want to strut!

A Little Encouragement

I've had some trouble keeping up with the blog lately. It is due to a combination of being busy, writers block and generally feeling a little burnt out. Out of the blue I received a very sweet note from a friend saying how much she enjoys the blog and that she looks forward to getting new posts. I was so appreciative of her encouragement! She didn't even know I had been struggling with writing but simply hearing that she looks forward to my next posts was enough to recharge me.
Encourage the people in your life. Tell a friend who is trying to lose weight that you are impressed by how often they have been going to the gym. Or if your assistant has recently stepped up the quality for their work, let them know that you have noticed and that you appreciate it. A little encouragement can go a long way. A simple "Keep it up!" may relight the fire within your friend and help them stay on track towards their goals.
Song of the Day
This past weekend was my 5 year college reunion. And while sometimes I may wish I was back in college, I don't think I could keep up (see exhibit A below). A friend had asked me about 6 months ago to play this song when our reunion came around and I just couldn't let her down. Please enjoy OAR's Crazy Game of Poker.
Exhibit A - I have a funny feeling I wasn't about to throw that bottle of wine away

The Happiness Muzzle

When I’m in a bad mood or I’m dealing with something really heavy, I draw into myself and become recluse. But when I’m happy, good Lord, I won’t shut up! And boy was I happy this past Saturday. One of my oldest, dearest friends was in town and I was so excited to see her. We went to dinner with some of my friends from the city. It was it was one of those random nights which wasn’t planned it all but fell together perfectly. Everyone was in a great mood, laughing and enjoying each other’s company. And I was talking my face off...telling stories, asking questions, making jokes. While it is nice to be talkative and social, I should have taken a deep breath, shut my mouth, and let my guests speak.

So I’m going to invent a Happiness Muzzle. I simple devise that I will slide onto my face which will allow me to sit there smiling at my lovely companions but will keep me from yammering on like a hyper active monkey.

Song of the Day
Today's song was a request and the first song I've played from the Divine Miss M! I had never heard this song but I was told it put will put you in a "finger snapping, toe tapping mood" and it certainly does. Please enjoy Bette Midler's Slow Boat to China.
