Living in the Past

Am I the only one still writing '08 on things? I have nothing against The Niner (aka 2009) so I don't know what my problem is. Maybe once I hit June I'll finally be able to let 2008 go.

Song of the Day
Matt has been asking me to play this song for a while. Please enjoy Police On My Back from The Clash. A good Friday song!

A Local Whore

Last summer my mom was at my aunt and uncle's helping them make dinner. She was chopping veggies when she announced she was becoming a real localvore. "Whadda ya want to do THAT for?" my uncle responded. Slightly hurt by his nasty tone, my mom meekly explained that it was good for the community, a nice way to support her local farmers -- whom she liked -- and generally, she said, it's good for the environment . When she didn’t hear any response from either her sister or brother-in-law, she looked up from her chopping to see them both staring at her horrified. Finally Aunt Susan says, “What are you becoming again?"
"A LOCALVORE!"
"Oh my god," said my uncle, "I thought you said a 'Local Whore'!"
They all had a good chuckle and everything was right with the world.

I did some localvoring myself this weekend. Union Square has a great farmers market on the weekends. Loads of fresh, local produce, veggies, flowers, meats, cheeses and baked goods. I had walked through the market a few times before, but I was always too scared to buy anything fearing that one of the merchants would try to haggle with me (I have a bizarre fear of haggling). I sheepishly lurked around a stand that had beautiful, ripe tomatoes and finally, assured that there was little to no haggling going on, I bought a few. Triumph! I am becoming a localvore!

Me doing a little localvoring. I'm going to need to have a serious discussion with Matt about letting me out of the house in that outfit. Good lord! It looks like the secret footage from What Not To Wear.
The fruits of our labor: a very yummy lunch of all local veggies.

Song of the Day

I've been playing a lot of old school stuff lately so in an effort to be more relevant I chose Lady Gaga's Poker Face.

Sorting Out My Life

Sorting out your life...a term usually reserved for parolees, recovering meth addicts, and often me. Do you ever feel like your life has gotten away from you? I don't mean like a "And you may ask yourself, well...how did I get here?" Talking Heads moment. But more like you have no clean underwear, there is a big stack of unopened mail, the fridge smells and there is literally nothing to eat in the house. This is how I felt when I arrived home on Monday night.

We had been dog/house sitting and I hadn't been back to my apartment in almost a week. The disarray that met me as soon as I opened the door was enough to make me curl up on the pile of crap on my bed. It was all too much to face on Monday night so I just mentally prepared for the next evening when I would "sort out my life". And last night I sorted my ass off! I went grocery shopping, went to the gym, got my eyebrows waxed, made a balanced dinner and did laundry. Bing! Bang! Boom! My life is sorted.

Song of the Day
Today's song is Talking Head's Once in a Lifetime.

Inner-city Vacation

One of the wonderful things about New York is that you can feel like you are in a different city just by hanging out in a new neighborhood. Matt and I dog/house sat for some friends this weekend and we treated it like a mini vacation. These friends are very cool and chic so it was fun to pretend we were cool and chic for a bit. They live in Turtle Bay, by the UN, a neighborhood we rarely visit. We had a great time exploring. There are lots of little parks in that area. We ate at an outdoor grill and had gelato. How European!

An inner-city vacation is a great way to save some money, alleviate travel stress and fall further in love with New York Cit or any city! If you can't convince a friend to trust you with their dog, just take a day trip to a new neighborhood.

Song of the Day
Today's song is Rod Stewart's Rhythm of My Heart. When was the last time you heard this song!? It makes me want to put my arm around a good buddy and sing very loudly. And it wouldn't hurt to be pretty drunk too.

Cute Enough To Eat

I spent the weekend in Minnesota with Matt and his family. I'm too tired right now to give you all the details of our wonderful trip but I do have to say that Matt's new nephew, Jack, is cute enough to eat. Matt clearly agrees with me.Song of the Day
Today's song is Creedance's Lookin' Out My Backdoor which we jammed out to this weekend.

Bottle It!

Now that I'm on board with The Gap bottling the scent of grass, I've been thinking of other smells that I would like to see bottled.  Here are my top 10:

10. Hot wings
 9.  Drier sheets
 8.  Old Spice
 7.  Basil
 6.  Babies
 5.  Cinnabon
 4.  Blown out matches
 3.  Toast
 2.  Campfire
 1.  Yellow cake

Your welcome, Gap!

What scents do you love?

Song of the Day
Today's song is The Rolling Stone's Beast of Burden, just because it is a great song.

Mmmmmm! Grass!

When I was about 9 or 10 I was with my dad in the The Gap. They had just launched their line of scents and I was puzzled by the one called Grass. “Dad, who the heck would want to smell like grass?” I asked. “People from the city,” he said as he patted my head. And it turned out, as per usual, my dad was right. I was home in New Hampshire this weekend and the smell of grass was everywhere. Now that I am one of those “people from the city", I would kill to smell like grass. I want to makeout, marry, and have lots of babies with the smell of grass.

If you live in New Hampshire, you refer to this time of year as “mud season." If you don’t live there, you refer to it as “most beautiful, I’m moving here immediately, season." Everything is in bloom and the trees and grass are the brightest greens you will ever see. The only problem is the back flies whose goal in life is to fly into your eyes, mouth, and beer. But I can handle those pesky flies for that wonderful smell of grass!

Song of the Day
Today's song is Tim McGraw's Where the Green Grass Grows, which I know I've already played but come on! The song is perfect for this post.

Team 101

My two officemates have gotten on the 101 Things train and I couldn't be more excited! They both just completed their list of 101 Things in 1001 Days. Helping them build their lists has been a fun way to get to know each other better. It has also given me renewed interest in my own list.

My favorite Thing from my officemates lists:

C's list: # 5 Watch all MetaCritic best-reviewed movies of the past 5 years (0/100)

A's list: # 72 Leave a $100 tip for a Waffle House waitress

Have you made a list of the 101 Things in 1001 Days?

Some (not me) Like It Hot

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Today, like many of you, I’m enjoying some Mexican food. However, I don’t do spicy. I CAN’T do spicy. I don’t know if it's because I didn’t grow up eating spicy food or because I have extra sensitive taste buds. I might have been scared straight during a trip to Mexico when I was 9. My stepdad ate a small pepper from a bowl on the table at a restaurant. We all watched in horror as he turned from red to a sort of purplish color and then almost passed out as the wait staff ran around yelling and handing us salt, milk, tortillas and anything else to ease the atomic heat.

I’m a total wimp when it comes to spicy things. Even now I’m perspiring a little bit and my gums are burning from my Chipotle burrito bowl that has no sauces marked higher than “mild”. I have trouble with Bloody Marys and even ground pepper. Alas, I'll never host an international traveling/eating show. Every time Anthony Bordain dives into some unknown dish without asking if it's spicy, I'm amazed.

But I'm getting better. Though I’ll never be one of those people who puts hot sauce on everything, I’m slowly training my taste buds to handle a little spice. Matt literally hugged me when I bought medium salsa the other day. Poco a poco!

Today's song is Buster Poindexter's Feeling Hot Hot Hot. Perfect!

Fashion Blues

I don't like my outfit today. I'm wearing a yellow and green argyle sweater and brown pants. I feel like a preppy banana. I'm far from a fashionista but I feel off all day when I don't like my outfit. Does this happen to you? What do you do to combat the fashion blues? Trying to save money may force me to do some shopping in my own closet but I often find if I spend some time the night before I can but together something cute for the next day.

Oh kick ass! I just remembered this super cute cashmere cardigan that I got at the Jcrew sample sale the other day. Fashion crisis averted!

Song of the Day
Thanks to everyone who responded with their favorite one-hit wonder of the 80's. There are so many great ones that I think I will have to play a few more. Thanks Stormy Vawn Bradley for choosing Club Nouveau's Lean on Me. It was one of my graduation songs too!
